Apr. 21st, 2012 01:24 pmYou know how when you rewatch something without paying attention to the plot, you notice a lot of extra stuff happening in the background? Well, I've done that with Spartacus Vengeance and I've developed a theory. The theory is this: Gannicus is, in fact, a jedi.
Stephen DeKnight admitted himself that Star Wars was part of his inspiration for creating the character of Gannicus, whom he describes as a combination of Han Solo and Achilles. And while Han Solo did not have the mastery over the force, Gannicus clearly does.
Argument the first - Gannicus can make swords fly into his hands.
Already in Gods of the Arena it was established that rather than lugging swords around during a fight Gannicus prefers to scatter them strategically, safe in the knowledge that they'll be nearby when he'll need them. In episode 5 of Vengeance he went a step further and made a sword appear in his hand without picking it up first!
See, here he is, jumping with one sword:

and here he is having landed with two:

No wonder the crowd was so crazy for him!
Argument the second - Gannicus can use jedi mind tricks
While Gannicus has not (yet) been spotted going: "These are not the droids you're looking for," he does seem to be able to influence the minds of others with the message of "I am NOT attempting to seduce your SO." How else would Oenomaus remain so blind to the fact Gannicus could not tear his eyes away from Melitta in Gods of the Arena? This power has been further confirmed in episode 9 of Vengeance, when Gannicus got drunk and began putting the moves on whoever was nearby, starting with Naevia, with oblivious Crixus standing right there next to them:

Yeah, that's the same insanely jealous Crixus who had been able to spot Naevia schmoozing up to a guard across the yard in the middle of training in Blood and Sand.
In conclusion, when Gannicus said he was "many years from Capua" he must have meant "many light years". ;-)
