My blu rays for the first two seasons of Spartacus have finally arrived, so I've spent Easter getting myself thoroughly reacquainted with Gods of the Arena. I didn't remember the second season being so entertaining!

There were so many great lines, like Oenomaus' reaction to Gannicus' plan of killing Tullius "You'd have a better chance throwing yourself off the cliff and hoping to land on the man." Hee! Or Batiatus' remark at watching Gannicus' antics in the arena "I don't care if he strips naked and fights with his cock as long as he wins." Now, why hadn't Vettius demanded that?! Because Gannicus would totally go for it, too (incidentally, according to the commentary the first idea for the blindfolded fight was that Gannicus would tear off a part of his subligaria and use that, and considering how skimpy those are in the first place, it's not like there'd have been a lot of material left).

I have also greatly appreciated the fact that the whole season was basically about how everyone wanted Gannicus, because that's a theme I can get into so much more than the failed rebellion of seasons' 1 and 3 ;-) So I loved seeing Tullius all "I want him! I want him! I want him!" and Batiatus being all "You can't have him! He's MINE!". Then there's Crixus, who's almost won me over with his huge crush. The reaction shot he has after Gannicus disposes of the last opponent in the ring of fire fight had me rolling, because he totally looks like the just came a little ;-) I'll have to keep an eye out while rewatching Blood and Sand to see if he's wearing Gannicus' necklace.

I've also watched the special features and listened to the commentaries (well, 3 out of 6). A part that had me cackle like a crazy person was in a featurette about a day on set with Lucy Lawless. Near the end she was walking through the trailer park and ran into Dustin Clare:

Lucy: Morning darling!

:a good half a minute of that later:
interviewer: So you're close to the cast members?
Lucy: Oh that? Oh that's nothing.

Hee! The perks of the job!
Also, too bad they were wearing a coat and a bathrobe over their costumes, because that'd be some awesome footage :-)

Speaking of the perks of the job, here's Dustin comment on the scene when Varis (played by Peter Feeney) is :ahem: appreciating Gannicus: "Poor Peter, it was like his first day or something, wasn't it? And he'd just been feeling me up for about three hours."

Yeah, "poor" is not the adjective I'd have used. Maybe it means something else in Australian? ;-)

"poor" maybe because he wasn't allowed to do more than feeling Gannicus up? LMAO it certainly was envy-inspiring.

Hee, that makes more sense. Or maybe "poor" because if that was his first day, it would only go downhill from there ;-)
