fannish stuff
Mar. 16th, 2010 05:38 pmMy friend
maggie33 came to stay with me for a week, which is great because I get to talk about fannish things all day (or, well, all afternoon after I come back from work) ;-) During one of our discussions I have realised what my biggest pairing kink is - I love it when the characters are not equal in that one of them perceives the other as better than they themselves are, or one is completely in love while the other is mostly indifferent... Looking back at my fannish history, most of the pairings I liked either follow this pattern or can be interpreted to follow it. If there is no clear imbalance like in 3:10 to Yuma, where Charlie Prince is completely devoted to Ben Wade, I tend to most like the stories that present the pairing as an unrequited love, or in which one character thinks he doesn't deserve the other for whatever reason. It works a lot like hurt/comfort fics - I get to feel sorry for my poor woobie character and I just love that. Hmm, I wonder what other epiphanies I might experience before the end of the week.
Another great thing about
maggie33's visit is that we're watching a lot of films - I made her sit through Bronson, In Bruges, The Private Lives of Pippa Lee and Rocknrolla (speaking of, how aren't there any One Two/Handsome Bob stories out there? I was only able to find one tiny snippet on
yuletide!). We also went to see Alice in Wonderland, which I thought was ok but nothing to write home about.
I did love how they did the Cheshire Cat, all floaty and purring. And what was up with the Mad Hatter being such a major character and seemingly having a romantic connection with Alice? I know Johnny Depp is attractive most of the time, and has fans that will perceive him as the love interest regardless of what he looks like, but COME ON! It's a good thing they didn't make that too explicit, which allows for an alternate lesbian reading, what with Alice being the White Queen's champion and all...
