Babylon AD
Aug. 30th, 2008 12:04 amSo, first things first, there was not a single bit of any of David's tattoos visible in the film. I'd call it a rip-off, but I got a shirtless Vin Diesel with a lot of fake tattoos instead, so that mollified me somewhat. Still, it's false advertising - you don't have David Belle play "Kid with Tattoos" and then have him wear a winter coat or a sweater in all his scenes!
On the bright side, he had a line. In English! It was "Forget it," and he still somehow managed to make it heavily accented, but it was such a novel experience to hear him speak and have it make sense to me ;-)
Sadly the parkour action was filmed with a handheld camera operated by someone in throes of epilepsy and edited by someone with a serious case of ADD :sigh: Luckily there were quite a few shots of David when he was staying relatively still, so I did get to see him properly on a big screen (thank you Mathieu Kassovitz, I knew I could count on you!)
The film itself was so so. I really enjoyed acts 1 and 2, act 3 was ok, and then the ending sucked so much it hurt. From the sf geek perspective I have to say that the dystopian vision of the future presented in the film was very interesting. I'd love to see the director's cut, especially after reading Mathieu rage that the production company hacks cut out all the good stuff about the borders and such from the current version of the film. My favourite novum was definitely the digital map - it was made of awesome. The cityscape was underwhelming, though.
Still, I will probably go see Babylon AD at least once more. I just can't resist the combined temptation of David Belle and Vin Diesel on a big screen :-)
