"Children of Men"
Oct. 11th, 2006 09:55 pmI went to see "Children of Men" today and I can't quite make up my mind about it. It's not a very good sf film, but I suppose it is a good film nevertheless. The acting is superb, all the characters are unbelievably vivid, and even if they only show up for a minute or two on the screen, they ring very true. Like actual people, which is something quite rare in cinema for some reason.
Aside from that the warlike scenes are fantastically done - I never knew Cuaron had it in him, I'm talking "Black Hawk Down" quality here. And since I'm on the subject of realism, I loved all the bits which have been taken straight from real life and which you'd never expect to see in a film. I gurantee you have never seen a car chase like the one in "Children of Men" in any movie before, for example.
On the other hand I was quite underwhelmed by the beating-the-audience-over-the-head allusions to nazizm and concentration camps. Seriously, just how un-subtle can you be?! Although the complaints of the German lady Clive Owen sees on the train station were pretty good. Too bad they're lost on people who don't speak German.
So all in all I guess I tentatively recommend the film.
In other news, I finally registered for Sectus, YAY! Even if I'm still not entirely sure I could afford it this month. Now I just have to worry about organising some accommodation :sigh: It's so annoying to live 20 minutes away from London - it seems so near, but is in fact so very very far...
