elanor_isolda and son_of_darkness (who, BTW, is neither gay nor a girl, just so you know) today in Haagen Dazs on Leicester Square. We've had a great time chatting about fandomy and non-fandomy stuff, and gorging ourselves on ice-cream until we could barely walk ;-) For me the highlight of the day was son_of_darkness confessing that I scare him. Well, technically what scares him are my unorthodox canon-based views on Draco, but hey, he still cowered before me, so it was all good ;-)
Afterwards I set off to see "A Scanner Darkly" only to discover that the location of Odeon is Covent Garden's best kept secret. After walking around for half an hour and futilely asking a dozen of natives for directions I lost hope and returned to Leicester Square to watch the film in Empire. The ticket cost me 11.50 but at least I could find the bloody theatre!
So, "A Scanner Darkly." I've waited for the film to come out for a year a half, expecting a wonderfully meaty indie sf, full of existential and/or ontological questions, and instead I got a drug film. A good one as far as drug films go, I suppose, but as I have no real experience with drugs, I could only appreciate the movie on a purely intellectual level without getting emotionally involved. Yeah, the animation rocked, and so did Keanu Reeves, and the one novum introduced in the whole film - a blurring suit, was done brilliantly, but I still couldn't help but feel disappointed by getting an ode to Philip K. Dick's addict friends instead of a proper exploration of the nature of humanity sf is so good at.
I'll still be buying the DVD, though, I just know it :sigh:
