Prince of Persia
May. 21st, 2010 11:09 pmPrince of Persia has finally been released today here in the UK, so naturally I went to see it. After reading dozens of contradictory reviews I didn't know what to expect, but I have to say that overall I quite enjoyed myself. No, it's not as good as the first Pirates of the Caribbean, and yes, there is too little parkour for my taste. Still, the characters are enjoyable (I really liked all three brothers, and Alfred Molina was funny), the adventure is interesting and it's moving at a good pace. Dastan is an appealing hero and Tamina did have some very cool moments that made her not at all as annoying as she seemed from the previews.
The thing I feared the most - poor editing of the parkour scenes - wasn't as bad as it could have been. Sure there were too many quick cuts that destroyed a lot of the effect, but both the pace and the camera angles were good, which is more than I can say, for example, about B13U. And that scene when Dastan is infiltrating the castle that David recommends?
"There is a move in this scene where some guests are running up the stairs to get to Dastan and he is on a higher level. To avoid them he jumps over a massive empty space and lands behind them. That was my favourite. When I planned it, I saw it clearly in mind. And when I watched it back after it was shot, it was exactly as I had pictured it."
Yeah, it's quite cool :-)
I've read that some people had a problem with the ending, but it worked perfectly for me. Maybe because I kinda knew what to expect, having read somewhere that it is apparently very similar to the game.
I think the biggest problem I had was with the occasional use of a voiceover, which just never is not cheesy. But then I kinda embraced it, because the whole film has this old time epic feel to it, and how could that not be somewhat cheesy?
So yeah, I'd recommend PoP. I'll probably go see it again this weekend.
