Things I've learnt from my trip to Paris:

- 18-screen cinemas are harder to locate than you'd think.
- Google maps LIE.
- My French pronunciation is so horrible French people give up on me and answer in English when asked for directions.
- Regardless of what everyone says you will not necessarily like B13U if you liked B13.
- Even though it's been 17 years since I've last been to Paris, my impression of it hasn't changed. I think that is in fact the only thing my current and my 12-year-old self agree on. Amazing.
- B13U is a huge box office success - of the three screenings I planned to see I only managed to get tickets for two, and even that was because I was lucky enough to get to the ticket machine relatively early.
- There were maybe ten females in the audience; and the viewers' average age was late teens. Way to reach an intended demographic.
- Promo pictures lie - at least a third of the scenes depicted were not actually in the film.
- I really need to see a version of B13U that I can fully understand, because evidently the dialogues are hilarious.

Things I've learnt today:
- Crack really is good for everything! Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] left_sider I am not only quite cheerful today, but also being assaulted by an army of plot bunnies, both things I had hardly expected yesterday evening.

Out of curiosity, what is your impression of Paris? I may have the chance to take a day trip there, so how was the Eurostar?

Hmm, which promo pictures? The ones of Damien and Leito's rooftop date maybe? With a bit of luck perhaps the DVD will include cut scenes and more goodies.

I don't know whether or not to hope for a third movie. On the one hand, I just love watching Cyril and David be badass, even in limited quantities. But if they're going to keep inserting pointless females I'd rather pass. They need to get back to the buddy vibe that worked so well in the first one. Or else let Damien have Lola at least.

I think subtitles will help a lot. Most of what I loved about the first film was the pissy banter, and I'm pretty sure that at least is intact in this one. As long as Damien and Leito still sound like an old married couple, I can work around the rest of the issues. ;-)

Eurostar's ok, like any train, really. Mind you, I haven't travelled in the first class which is supposed to be super-luxurious :-)

Paris, though, is underwhelming. I have no idea what exactly I don't like about it, but it left me cold twice now, so clearly something about the city doesn't agree with me.

Heh, I think the highlight of my visit was seeing a fireman on the street. And he wasn't even doing any parkour, just standing there in the black SWAT-like uniform. Still, that was by far my favourite Parisian sight :-)

As for promo pics, the rooftop date was there, though filmed from the front, not the back, and without Leito's leap "over" the Eiffel Tower. Neither was there a scene in which Damien would do a backflip in front of the B13 sign. Nor did he attack Woo by jumping down the stairs at him. And the Chinese guard never pointed his gun at Leito. They seemed quite friendly in fact.

I'd like another film, mostly because I feel it could only be an improvement after the second one ;-) Also because there was so little Leito and parkour in this one that I'm desperate for any chance of more. On the other hand I'm not sure how there could be another B13 film without B13...

I'm obsessively checking the release dates' page on IMDB hoping it'll get updated :-)

Heh, I wouldn't go first class, either, but public transport in Europe is SOOOOO much nicer than what we have in the States it doesn't matter. I took a regular train oop norf during my last trip to London and it was great.

Almost everyone I know who's been to Paris has said the same thing! Funny, since it's supposed to be such a great city. I've never been dying to visit like I was with London, but it's one of those places I feel I should see if I'm that close and since I paid lots of $ to study French at uni. I don't care about museums and such, so my to-do list, in no particular order, is:
1) Climb the Eiffel Tower
2) Walk down the Champs Élysées
3) Eat cheap pastries and a pain au chocolate
4) Visit the Jardin des Tuileries
5) Take funny pics of me and [livejournal.com profile] _backpages_ pretending to scale #36 B13-U style
6) Perve on Damien-esque men in uniform like your fireman
7) See the Eiffel Tower lit up at night
8) Conquer my fear of the Chunnel

If they decide to make a third movie, I think we should send in our own screenplay. Yes/yes?

IMDB has been letting us down lately! There's no news at all, and Europacorp still hasn't answered my e-mail about a US release. :(

Evidently there exists something called "the Paris syndrome" - a depression caused by the disappointment in Paris that Japanese tourists are particularly susceptible to, so much so that the Japanese embassy has a special hotline for dealing with it.

I'm all for writing our own screenplay for the third film! Though not yet in French. Maybe in a few years...

I think you should definitely give Paris a go. Who knows, you just might like it :-) And it is ridiculously close - two and a half hours from London.

I'm thinking I'll brave another visit once that parkour playground of David's gets opened. Because seeing it live? Would totally make up for the disappointing content of B13U :-)

LOL at the Japanese hotline! Luckily I don't have high expectations for Paris so I'll probably be okay. If the Eurostar prices don't change between now and May I'm gonna go for it.

I'll have to see B13-U with subtitles first, but then I may attempt a sequel AU thingy to fix certain things. I could probably do dialogue in French with a lot of help from wordreference.com, though a full screenplay would be a stretch, yes!

The parkour playground sounds amazing. I'm not sure I could stand to watch live parkour, though, because I'd be in mortal fear of someone getting seriously hurt! The only reason I can watch B13 and Cyril and David's videos is because I know they came out okay in the end. :) And I still have heart-in-throat moments watching them do those crazy stunts!

Woo hoo! So you're coming after all? Awesome! We've gotta meet :-)

When I booked my Eurostar tickets in November I was able to get them for under 30 quid one way. Now they'd be around 60. So I suggest you book as early as possible.

Heh, it somehow never occurred to me to be worried when I watch the demos. I guess it's because they make it look so easy :-)

[identity profile] left-sider.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee, I'm thinking ice cream in Leicester Square. ;-) I had originally planned that to coincide with a B13-U subtitles viewing, but certain bastards are screwing us over. Not impressed.

I think they're around $50 now, so not too bad. I have to solidify my dates before I book, though.

Heh, I have overly-developed mothering genes or something. I get nervous watching anyone do anything dangerous. Maybe it's because I'm such a klutz I'm imagining what would surely happen to me if I attempted that stuff!

[identity profile] czeri.livejournal.com 2009-02-27 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmm, ice cream... I hope I can wait till May ;-)

Let me know once you have the exact dates. I'd prefer to meet during the weekend, but I could always take half a day off work if the weekend isn't an option.

I keep quietly hoping that some other European countries will get B13U before the UK. And there is the French cinema in London, but I'm not sure B13U is the sort of film they'd decide to show...

As for watching dangerous stunts, I do admit that I could never understand the appeal of circuses or illusionist shows which rely on making it seem as if the performer is going to get killed. But as I've said, in David's and Cyril's case I have complete trust in their abilities and so I can watch them without worrying :-)
