big YAY to fanfic!

I've gotta admit that the whole kerfuffle with "responsible" fanfiction was pissing me off a lot these last few days. Especially the eagerness of so many fen to jump on the bandwagon and aim an "even-handed and well-thought-out" kick at the writers of stories they personally object to. Luckily, although I still do find it vaguely unsettling that the [livejournal.com profile] daily_snitch linked to [livejournal.com profile] heatherly's post but not to any of the answers to it, I did get much better now that [livejournal.com profile] hd_holidays started posting. There's nothing better to cheer one up than good fic, after all :-)

Well, good fic and a good laugh. So, blissfully floating on a cloud of canon-based Draco goodness (Götterdämmerung ROCKS!), I offer you newspaper headlines:

I know! And the Daily Snitch absolutely did look at my post, according to LJtoys. Biased, much?

[identity profile] czeri.livejournal.com 2007-06-10 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
God, I was hoping it was because whoever was preparing the links in the last couple of days happened to not have any of the responses on their f-list. But now it really is suspicious that your post was overlooked.

Well, the person who put the Snitch together today is one of the people who recced Heatherly's original post.

[identity profile] czeri.livejournal.com 2007-06-10 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah yes, there is that. Well, Kye better make up for it when it's his turn ;-)

[identity profile] melusinahp.livejournal.com 2007-06-10 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh. I'd be surprised, but we'll see.

I left a comment on the latest Snitch suggesting a few links with alternative viewpoints. Hopefully, they'll post at least one.

That is a brilliant idea, and it did work - all three are now up!

Oh yes, of course, because I have a long history of being lol biased and disregarding other people's points of view when they don't match my own perfectly, right? I was putting the Snitch together in a hurry last night after leaving another fandomer's housewarming just so I could do it before midnight; I didn't have time to actually read either one of the three posts I saw, and I don't link things I haven't read, unless they're sent through e-mail or they're fic Hot Recs. Besides the newsletter, I also had fic to write, which I only get to do on weekends these days.

So -- I'm sorry that my lack of time interfered with your righteous purpose in fandom! But no, I didn't not link your post because I disagree with it. Which, by the way, I actually don't -- disagree, that is. Believe it or not, it's actually possible to see both heatherly's point and yours (and Greenie's) at the same time -- and yes, I've read your post at this point. And I've forwarded your comment on to the central Snitch address.

You know, it's funny; you don't even know me but this is the second time you've accused me of having intentions I didn't actually have (the last time being over Anne during the harry_hols fiasco). If I've ever inadvertently pissed in your cornflakes and now you've got a problem with me, I think it would be better if we, you know, talked about it. My e-mail address is furiosity [at] livejournal [dot] com.

I have emailed you.

Eek, that turned out all wrong.

[livejournal.com profile] furiosity, I'm glad to hear there was no ill will on your part when it comes to the (not) linking to the responses to [livejournal.com profile] heatherly's post. And I would like to assure you that [livejournal.com profile] melusinahp is one of the most kick-ass people I know, whom I'm sure you'd get along with splendidly if you don't let the current circumstances prejudice you.

[livejournal.com profile] melusinahp, I'm terribly sorry. It should have occured to me to properly filter potentially sensitive topics. I'd also like to assure you that [livejournal.com profile] furiosity is a very cool person with whom I'm sure you'll find you have a lot of common ground you can agree on, and hopefully you will become friends yet.

It's ok, hon, we're in touch via e-mail -- no hard feelings on my part. I'm glad you didn't filter this, btw, because at least this way I was able to explain what happened instead of having you both walk away thinking that I had deliberately not linked to the posts that disagreed with heatherly's. As I said to [livejournal.com profile] melusinahp in e-mail, it was a bit annoying to see so much dissent behind flock but almost nothing out in public or in comments to heatherly's post. It's kind of like separately delivered monologues that lead to side-taking rather than a dialogue, and as we learned through the FanLib debacle, little is as important as fandom dialogue when it comes to keeping us a community.

Note to self: next Saturday, start compiling Snitch links in the morning. >.>
