There's a funny thing about DVD extras - I like it when there are loads of them, but hardly ever do I actually bother to check them out. Not unless I'm completely obsessed with one of the actors. It's a pity, though, because you can learn so many interesting things from DVD extras.

In the featurette about making "3:10 to Yuma", for example, the director and the producers reveal how, when they were filming the final parts in Contention, which was supposed to be in the middle of the desert, they were hit by a snowstorm. So they imported tons of earth to cover all the snow for the filming, even if Russell Crowe quite sensibly advised them to show a sign "Welcome to Contention, home of the white sands," instead :snicker:

It's even funnier when you consider that I was watching it right after the commentary on "30 days of Night", a movie that is supposed to take place in Alaska, but was filmed right outside of Oakland, New Zealand. So the snow was all soap and starch, and the mist from the characters breathing was all CGI. Movie magic at its finest :-)

However, the best part of the commentary was when Josh Hartnett said that in the opening sequence, when Ben Foster was walking through endless snowy wilderness, he stuck snowballs in his underwear in order to get the properly frozen feeling. That's devotion to the craft!

Heh, in an interview about "Alpha Dog" Sharon Stone was also talking about how Ben wouldn't allow her to go easy on him in a scene when her character was attacking him and was instead pushing her to make it real, so that when the cameras stopped rolling he really was bleeding. And if Ben is that devoted to getting in character, it makes that cowboy bootcamp before "3:10 to Yuma" sound even more fun than it had before. Because it means that when Ben, Russell and Christian were spending pre-production weeks riding through the desert, shooting their guns and barbecuing, Ben was busy developing an intense crush on Russell :-)

RC: "Dude, stop trailing after me, you're starting to creep me out."
BF, heartbroken: "Sorry, boss."
RC: eyeroll

Hee!
